Scat the Cat
(Author unknown)

Once upon a time there was a pretty little black cat named Scat. Scat was black like his mother, black like his father, and black like all his sisters and brothers. He was just a black cat!

But Scat wasn't happy. He was tired of looking like everyone else in his family. So, one day he said,

"I'm Scat the Cat, I'm sassy and fat, and I can change colors just like that!" (Snap your fingers) and then, as quick as a wink, he changed colors.

He wasn't a black cat anymore. Now, he was a lovely shade of yellow. He was yellow like a lemon--yellow like butter--yellow like a lion.

He went outside to show off his pretty new color to his brothers and sisters, but...as soon as they saw him, they all screamed and ran away. "Eke!" they said. "A lion! Run for your lives!"

And Scat was left all alone. It wasn't any fun being yellow if no one would play with him, so he decided to try a different color.

He said, "I'm Scat the Cat, I'm sassy and fat, and I can change colors just like that!" (Snap your fingers).

And, just like that, he changed colors. This time he was green. What a pretty color to be. He was green like the leaves--green like the grass--green like the stems of the flowers.

Again, he went outside to show off his new color to his brothers and sisters. He walked right up to them in the backyard, but they didn't notice him. He looked just like the leaves and the grass and the stems, and they couldn't see him!

Well, this color just wasn't fun at all. You couldn't have fun playing if no one could see you. So, he decided to try a different color.

He said, "I'm Scat the Cat, I'm sassy and fat, and I can change colors just like that!" (snap fingers)

Poof! All of a sudden, he changed from a green cat to a bright red cat! Wow! They could surely see him now! Scat was excited about his bright new color, and he ran outside again to show his brothers and sisters what a pretty red cat he was.

Well, they could see him this time, but they thought he looked silly. They laughed at him and said, "Whoever heard of a bright red cat? You don't look like a cat at all. You look like a fire engine!"

How do you think Scat felt about his new color now? He decided that red wasn't the best color for him after all. It was no fun being laughed at.

So he said, "I'm Scat the Cat, I'm sassy and fat, and I can change colors just like that!" (Snap your fingers).

And, just like that, Scat changed colors once more. This time he chose a lovely shade of blue. Everybody likes blue. Blue like water-blue like the sky. No one would make fun of him now.

So he rushed out to show his new color to his brothers and sisters. They weren't in the backyard anymore. They had gone into the woods to play. So, Scat went to the woods, but he was in such a hurry that he forgot to watch where he was going and suddenly...splash! He fell into the pond.

Scat didn't know how to swim! Oh, no! What would he do?

"Help!" he called. "Help!" His brothers and sisters all came running to the pond. They could hear his voice, but he was the same color as the water. They couldn't see him. Scat was really getting scared, but luckily, his friend Timmy Turtle swam nearby, and Scat was able to jump on Timmy's back and ride safely to shore.

"Whew!" said Scat. "I don't want to be blue anymore. That was too scary!"

So he said, "I'm Scat the Cat, I'm sassy and fat, and I can change colors just like that" (snap your fingers).

He changed back to red, but that was not good. He looked silly when he was red. He changed back to green, but then he remembered that no one could see to play with him when he was green. He changed back to yellow, but that was too scary for his brothers and sisters. He didn't want to look like a scary lion. So he changed back to black. Scat the Cat found out that black was the best color for him to be, and he said,

"I'm Scat the Cat, I'm sassy and fat, I found my best color, and I'll always stay black!"

Scat was very happy now that he was black again, and he went outside to play with his brothers and sisters.
